What does it mean to be Grass Fed and Finished?
It is common practice for bison to be 'finished' on grain.
This means that the animals are fed grains (corn, wheat, oats, and/or barley.) 100 days prior to going for slaughter. This is done to fatten the animal up, increase marbling in the steaks and make for a heavier animal. For most farmers a heavier animal means a weightier pay cheque.
To be 'grass finished' means that the bison you eat have eaten fresh grass or hay bales. We believe this makes for a higher quality meat.
